Cornrows: From Foundation to Couture
The original protective style — and the foundation of nearly every braided look you love.

Cornrows are the architecture beneath everything. They are the underlay of sew-ins and wigs, the foundation of feed-in updos, and on their own, one of the most elegant protective styles a person can wear.
The technique
A cornrow is a three-strand braid worked tightly against the scalp, with each new section of hair fed in as the braid progresses down the head. Done well, a cornrow lies flat, follows a clean path, and has consistent tension from start to finish — no bumps, no pulled edges, no gaps.
Classic to couture
A simple straight-back set of six cornrows is timeless — perfect under a wig, headed to the gym, or as a clean two-week protective style. Move into curved patterns, geometric parts, or feed-in designs and the same technique becomes editorial: the kind of look that turns heads at a wedding or anchors a magazine cover.
“The most beautiful crowns we build start with the most carefully drawn parts.”
How long they last
Worn alone, cornrows refresh beautifully every two to four weeks. As a base under a wig or sew-in, they hold for six to eight weeks before takedown.
The investment
Cornrows are our most accessible service — $80 to $180 depending on size, pattern, and density. They're also a wonderful first appointment if you're new to the atelier and want to experience our work before committing to a longer style.
Don't underestimate them. The most beautiful crowns we build start with the most carefully drawn parts.

From the Chair
“I draw the parts in chalk before I touch the hair. If the parts aren't beautiful, the braids won't be either. It's the part most stylists rush — and the one that takes me the longest.”

Common Questions
While we're on the subject…
Will cornrows damage my edges?+
Not when they're done with proper tension. Pain during the braid is the warning sign — speak up immediately. We adjust on the spot.
Can I wash them?+
Yes — every 7 to 10 days with a diluted clarifying wash applied to the scalp. Air-dry fully before bed.
Are they really a 'first appointment' choice?+
They're our favorite first appointment. You see our parting work, our tension, and our hospitality — all in under three hours.
Pair It With
Small additions, larger feeling
Add beads or cuffs
A handful of subtle gold cuffs at the ends turns a simple set into something quietly special.
Pair with a silk wrap
Cornrows under a structured silk scarf is one of our favorite looks for a quiet weekend.
