How to Prep Your Hair for Knotless Braids
A 48-hour ritual that makes the difference between good braids and braids that move with you for eight weeks.

Knotless braids reward preparation. The technique is gentler than traditional box braids, but the foundation — clean, conditioned, fully stretched hair — is what allows your stylist to work quickly, lay each braid flat, and build a style that lasts six to eight weeks without tension or breakage.
48 hours before
Wash with a clarifying shampoo to remove product buildup, then follow with a deep conditioner. Leave the conditioner on for at least twenty minutes under a plastic cap or warm towel. Rinse with cool water to seal the cuticle.
24 hours before
Blow-dry on medium heat with a paddle brush, working in four sections from root to tip. The goal is stretched, not straight — your hair should still have its natural texture but be elongated enough that the stylist can grip cleanly. Avoid heavy oils or butters on the scalp; they make the hair too slick to braid neatly.
“A great install is ninety percent what happens before you sit in our chair.”
The morning of
Detangle gently with a wide-tooth comb. Bring a satin scarf for the drive home and a small bottle of water — sitting for four to six hours is easier when you arrive hydrated and unhurried.
What to skip
No heavy leave-in conditioners on the day of. No braid sprays "to help the stylist." No protein treatments within seventy-two hours — they can make the hair brittle and harder to braid smoothly.
The best appointments start with hair that's been quietly looked after for two days. That's the difference.

“When a guest arrives with stretched, clarified hair, I can shave a full hour off the appointment and the parts sit cleaner. I always notice — and I always finish softer-handed.”

Common Questions
While we're on the subject…
Can I co-wash instead of clarifying?+
Co-washing leaves a film that the braiding hair grips poorly. A true clarifying wash 48 hours before is non-negotiable.
What if my hair feels dry after blow-drying?+
A pea-sized drop of jojoba on the mid-lengths only — never the scalp the day of. We have it on the cart if you forget.
How early should I arrive?+
Five minutes early. We start with a quiet consultation, tea, and your reference images before the first part is drawn.
